Reducing Food Waste in a Growing Household: Review of Electric Kitchen Composter

electric kitchen composter

Food waste and loss makes up for a lot of the garbage piling up in landfills. As someone who’s been actively trying to become more sustainable everyday, this new composter popped up at the perfect time. I grow plants indoors in the desert and I just had my first child, so this kitchen composter was definitely necessary.

Game Changer in the Kitchen

We’ve been using our electric composter for about two weeks now and I am impressed with how user-friendly and quiet this machine is. The first time we used it we had a ton of expired food that we needed to get rid of, including black beans, banana peels, chicken and other old meats we had sitting in the fridge for too long.

I expected it to cycle for about 5.5-6 hours, but it was done within 3-4 hours. I’m no expert on compost, but the compost we got from the first run was pretty good. I added to the potted soil I currently have as I prepare to plant more this spring. Now, it’s a wait-and-see game to see how the soil takes the compost!

Rating the Features

Build - 8/10

  • It’s sleek with easy to remove parts (the bucket) and easy to clean.
  • Because it’s compact, it easily fits in our garage.
  • The filters are odor-reducing but it helps to keep it in a well-ventilated area.

Function 10/10

  • One of the easiest appliances to use. Compared to blenders, air fryers, toasters, etc. This machine is literally just one button to start the cycle, after you load and lock it.

Results - 7/10

  • Compost results vary wildly depending on what you put into your composter.
    • For example, if you have a heavy banana-filled compost, the results feel more mushy than a compost filled with chicken wings or black beans.
  • Blends very well with the soil I have currently, waiting to see how the plants thrive.

Sustainability 9/10

  • Runs fairly quickly so it doesn’t use up too much energy.
  • Contains 100% biodegradable filters that can be added to the compost after it's used up.

Overall - 9/10

This electric composter is an amazing addition to our household and I highly recommend it for small and large families that cook a lot during the week. It’s an easy-to-use machine and there’s no odor or smell, in a well-ventilated area. As a country, we really need to reign in our food waste and work together to focus on sustainable and eco-friendly efforts.
